HELPING OTHERS

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

Did you know that many children have written and published books? That’s right. When Jason Gaes was only seven years old, he was stricken with cancer. He decided to do something to help other people, so he wrote a book and called it My Book for Kids with Cancer. Jason’s book has helped people of all ages who suffer with this disease.

There’s an American proverb that goes like this:

"You always help yourself when you help others."

When Jason wrote his book, he helped a lot of people, and writing the book probably made Jason feel better. Even though Jason was only seven years old, he did something powerful for himself and for others. Today, remember this: No matter how young you are, you can make a difference in the world.

With something to think about, this is (name of narrator). Make it a great day... or not. The choice is yours.

RESPECT
Teasing Others

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

Most of us have been teased before. Teasing is a funny thing . . . or is it? When someone is being teased, people often laugh as if something funny is happening, but the truth is, teasing usually hurts. "Oh, I was just teasing," people say, but that doesn’t make it feel any better, does it?

British actress Lynn Redgrave must have been teased when she was a child, because these are her words today:

"Be kind to your school friends, and never tease them."

Today and every day, let’s treat each other with respect. Don’t try to be funny by saying hurtful things.

DIVERSITY

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

Today, I want you to imagine what it would be like if everyone in class were exactly the same, with the same hair and eyes, the same size and shape, the same voice, and the same laugh. What if everyone liked the same color and the same food and the same music? Wouldn’t life be dull?

Remember this, students:

"It’s good that we are all so different. It makes life more interesting."

We can learn from our differences, and we can celebrate what makes each of us so special. Today, celebrate all our wonderful differences by seeing what’s wonderful in others.

GRATITUDE

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

A Man-With-No-Shoes was feeling very sorry for himself, walking through the streets, full of self-pity and anger. He thought life was so unfair! Why didn't he have shoes like the others?

He came upon a man who was sitting on a blanket, playing a flute. The music was so beautiful that it lifted the spirits of the Man-With-No-Shoes, and he began to dance. "Come dance with me!" he said to the man sitting on the blanket. The man replied, "I can't, brother. I have no feet."

That brings me to an old Irish proverb:

"Be happy with what you have and you will have plenty to be happy about."

CHOICES

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

Do you remember when Pinocchio decides to go to Pleasure Island even after Jiminy Cricket begs him not to go because Pleasure Island is a bad place for little boys? Pinocchio doesn’t listen to Jiminy Cricket, does he? He makes a poor choice. Because Pinocchio makes that poor choice, he grows donkey ears and a tail. You’ve probably never made a poor choice and then grown donkey ears and a tail, but have you ever made a poor choice and things turned out badly?

"Our choices help decide what will happen next in our life."

In the end, Pinocchio makes some smart choices and becomes a brave, truthful, and unselfish little boy.

So listen up! This is what we can learn from Pinocchio and his friend Jiminy Cricket: It’s important to listen to the good advice of those who care, so you can make choices that will help you find your own happy ending.

SELF-RESPONSIBILITY
Learning From Mistakes

Good morning, (name of school). This is (name of narrator) with a few words of wisdom.

Making mistakes is a natural part of being a human being. We all do it, whether we are a street cleaner or a world leader, a teacher or a student, a young person or an old person. It's another one of those things we all have in common. We all make mistakes.

Now listen to what Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, great American writer and speaker, says about mistakes:

"A mistake is not something to complain about,
or to be ashamed of. It is a great teacher."

The fact that you realize you have made a mistake means you've already learned something. You've learned what not to do in the future. That’s good. Today, take responsibility for your mistakes, and remember, a mistake can be a great teacher.
