"Greenwood
Lake Middle School Golden Rule Award winners . . ."
As part of the new character development program at Greenwood Lake
Middle School, four students were selected as the school's first
[Project Wisdom] Golden Rule Award winners . . .
The awards are a result of the school's new program aimed at developing
and building good character. Based on
the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring and citizenship, students are selected by
each grade-level team of teachers in grades 5-8. Teachers base their
selections on the student's demonstration of these values through
individual behavior and deeds, service projects, time commitments
and personal attitudes, in classes and activities both in school
and in the community.
The character development program utilizes a multifaceted approach.
It forms the foundation for the student/parent handbook and code
of conduct, and is the basis of a parent-teacher-signed contract
for success in school, visually posted in every classroom and hallway
of the building.
Asst. Principal Dave Lamborne gives [Project Wisdom's] Words of
Wisdom, Food for Thought reading over the school public address
system every morning. The values are reinforced by each teacher,
and taught creatively in reading and writing assignments. One student
from grades 5-8 who exemplifies the core values is selected each
month and is showcased on the main hallway bulletin board. Student
recipients are treated to a special award luncheon with Principal
Carmine Giangrego and Lamborne, and there will be a special end-of-the-year
party for all the monthly Golden Rule Award recipients.
