Messages and Plans:
What's New
Elementary
Here are your May and June messages and lesson plans.
There are several ways you can implement this content:
- Take 10 minutes to read the message (either on the PA system,
in-house television system or as a class read-aloud), and then follow-up
with the discussion generators.
- Take 20, 30 or more minutes and choose one of the outstanding
follow-up activities written for different grade levels by an accomplished
reading specialist and childhood literature expert.
. . . The choice is yours.
Youre going to discover that these plans follow a consistent, easy-to-follow
format that provokes meaningful reflection and dialogue about issues that
really matter.

- Honoring Those Who Teach
Teacher Appreciation Week: May 4-10, 2008
Students learn that all people, young and old, like to
feel appreciated and that showing appreciation can be
as simple as saying, "I think you are a very kind
person. I want to be a kind person like you." But
living the lesson that a teacher has taught them is one
of the best ways they can show their appreciation.
Key Idea: Showing appreciation for teachers
Character Traits: Caring - Kindness - Respect -
Citizenship

- Brave Hearts
There are two kinds of courage. One kind of courage is

Key Idea: Acting upon core ethical values often
requires moral courage
Character Traits: Courage - Kindness - Honesty

Every person on Planet Earth has a special gift to give
the world, a special talent or skill he or she can use
to make our world a better place. Each person's gift is

so we can use it to make the world a better place.

a difference in the world

- Safe or Sorry
Student Safety Month: June
Every day, young people are injured unnecessarily. They
break bones, injure eyes, become permanently disabled, or
even lose their lives because some safety precaution wasn't
taken. Students explore the benefits of taking safety precautions
and the consequences to themselves and others when they
don't observe safety rules.
Key Ideas: Staying safe during outdoor summer activities
- Safety Rules
Character Traits: Responsibility - Respect - Citizenship
Message and Lesson Plan *
- Directing Your Own Life
Every time students act responsibly, they earn more trust.
With that trust usually comes more freedom to choose.
Being trustworthy can mean making some tough short-term
choices, but long-term, it can mean having greater control
over one's future. Students explore the idea that the
benefits of making responsible decisions far outweigh
the costs.
Key Ideas: Taking responsibility for one's choices
and actions - Directing one's life story - Goalsetting
Character Traits: Responsibility - Respect - Self-Management
