Plan Ahead
Secondary
Here's what you can expect for August and September 2008. Your May and June materials are available now!

These materials include special broadcast messages dealing with current or calendar events, or pressing issues. Also included are correlating lesson plans, worksheets, discussion generators, and follow-up activities for all academic areas.

If you are planning to use the weekly or monthly themes, it's important to know that because the ERS content addresses many calendar events, these topics may or may not fit within the theme you choose for any particular week. Consider setting aside one day per week to broadcast these special messages schoolwide (or use as classroom read-alouds), and then implement the corresponding lesson plan. These tools work really well for weekly advisory, character education, life skills, or enrichment classes.

  • Strength of Habit
    Beginning of the School Year

  • Aristotle once said "The habits we form from childhood make no small difference, but rather make all the difference." Students explore the idea that it is easier to form positive habits now than to break bad habits, and that our habits shape our character and our character determines the outcome of our lives.
Key Ideas: Creating good habits - Habits help form our character
Character Traits: Self Respect - Self Responsibility - Citizenship
  • Playing by the Rules
It's a new school year and it's time to talk about the rules. Rules help us maintain order, fairness, and safety. Most rules are established for an excellent reason and are intended to benefit the whole community. Students explore the rationale for rules, responsible ways to challenge rules, and the need to follow rules as responsible members of society.

Character Traits: Integrity - Respect - Responsibility
  • Making Amends
We all make mistakes. Sometimes our mistakes hurt someone else or someone else's property. That's when an apology is required, and many times, that's when it's necessary to make amends as best we can. Students will explore the notion that making amends is not a sign of weakness, but of self-respect and strong character.
Key Ideas: Making amends requires both humility and strength of character - Learning from mistakes
    Character Traits: : Self-Respect - Humility - Integrity
  • Look Who's Watching
We may get by with some poor choices when we think nobody's looking, but there's one very important person who is always watching - ourself, and our opinion of ourself matters. Students explore the importance of self-awareness, realizing that they are always watching their own behavior and the choices they make.
Key Ideas: Character is who you are when no one's looking - Right choices build self-esteem
    Character Traits: Self-Respect - Self-Awareness
  • Learning to Learn
    National School Success Month: September
Learning how to study not only helps students become better learners, it can help them become better people. September is National School Success Month, a great time to remind students that they deserve all the great benefits that come with learning strong study skills.

"Even when I think students may not be listening to the message, I find they do. When the high school kids come back to visit, they remind me of the Words of Wisdom!"
